Professional firm develops IT Strategy and commissions new system after learning that Microsoft support for their current system was about to end.

The Challenge

A professional firm in the centre of Edinburgh with sensitive data requirements discovered that ongoing Microsoft support for their computers using the Windows XP desktop operating system was to cease in 2014.

The firm approached Excellimore to carry out an IT Strategy Review. They were unsure if replacing like-for-like was appropriate and welcomed Excellimore’s guidance in how current technology could align with their business needs.

The Solution

Excellimore worked with the firm to identify what their requirements were, what an appropriate IT system would look like, and how that should be supported going forward. It became evident that the systems had become quite outdated across all parts of the IT estate: a major upgrade would be required and the cost was going to be significant.

Excellimore identified a number of possible changes that would result in improved data protection and enable the firm to work much more efficiently. The final solution involved a mix of both “Cloud” and “In-house” systems.

After reviewing a number of potential IT partners to take this forward, Excellimore was engaged to implement the IT Strategy. They worked alongside the firm to undertake the work in a phased manner that allowed the firm to manage their IT budget and keep staff working with minimal disruption.

The Successful Outcome

From our staff’s perspective, the new system is a pleasure to work with and so much faster – though there’s now no time to make a cup of tea between switching on the computers and sitting down to work! From a strategic point of view, we have much more confidence in how the system is managed, and can see, through reports, that our on-premise servers are securely backed up and our cloud services are tightly controlled.
In the future we look forward to working with Excellimore who have already highlighted other areas of IT where we could expect to see improvements.
